Co+2The addition of an oxidizing agent such as chlorine water to a clear solution?
Chlorine water can oxidize both Br- and I- to Br2 and I2 respectively.

Both are soluble in chlorinated organic solvents such as methylene dichloride, chloroform, or carbon tetrachloride. Br2 will give a brown colour and I2 will give a purple colour.
