Long term solutions generally require sacrifices. Americans are spoiled and don't like sacrifices.





What we need is a leader who isn't so concerned about getting elected or re-elected, that they will make the difficult decisions and have the balls to stand up when confronted on their decisions.Why do McCain, Obama, Bush, and the entire Senate often offer placebo solutions to clear and present dangers?
It's not that they offer placebo solutions to problems, it is that they offer solutions that pose as a screen for their political motivations and actions. It is done because politicians will do anything that will benefit themselves; they have no interest in helping the American people. Obviously, the population must be distracted from reality in order for this to be possible.Why do McCain, Obama, Bush, and the entire Senate often offer placebo solutions to clear and present dangers?
If you are referring to economic dangers, that is simple. The economy is based on perception, plain and simple.





If you can boost consumer confidence without costing anyone anything, isn't that a good thing? Confidence is what drives our economy... If you think everything is ok, you are more likely to spend, which in great amounts makes everything ok!





If you think it is bad, you won't spend... and in great amounts, that makes everything bad.





In a market society, if no one is buying, that means no one is selling... Markets fall, prices go up, vicious cycle. Sometimes plecebo works! ;)
Could you be a bit more vague? Your question is like asking ';when did you stop beating your wife';? What are the clear and present dangers? Why are they clear and present dangers? What is the placebo solution? Why is it a placebo solution? Also, the phrase ';placebo solution'; is an oxymoron.
Hi Chi ! Look, I am going to briefly run down a HUGE problem that the Congress is facing and see what you think. Its complex.


The ENRON LOOPHOLE was inaugurated by Wendy Gramm at the CFTC when ENRON wanted it. It allowed the ENRON bunch to pillage the State of California by manipulating the electrical energy markets there. The same loophole was later inserted in the dead of night into the ';Commodities Futures Modernization Act of 2000'; by her husband, R.Sen. Phil Gramm. This legislation produced a change in the regulation of energy (including oil) markets that allowed speculation and price manipulation and the emergence of ';dark markets'; (International Commodities Exchange ) enabling unlimited positions and limited transparency to be established by speculators and outside the purview of regulators such as CFTC. So, now the largest holder of heating oil in the northeast is MORGAN STANLEY, not an oil company. I have no info on who owns all the gasoline, but hoarding is occurring. (Wait till the price rises) Another aspect is that a sudden demise of the loophole will damage the big investment banks like Morgan Stanley, and what will the result of that be?


Aside, this same R. Sen. Phil Gramm, Wendy's husband , is the author of legislation that allowed the present mortgage crisis to occur. (Loaning to unqualified people, bundling the mortgages, and selling the bundles).


This one family of Republican psychoradicals probably did more harm to the United States than Osama bin Laden and his crew of loonies ! And this screwball, Phil Gramm is R.Sen. John McSame's chief economic adviser. What wonders does the Republithug Party have in store for us???


Anyhow, the whole MESS illustrates what the Congress is trying to sort out WITHOUT doing any further harm to our beloved (by Democrats) country. Its no wonder they don't get more done !!!
Politicians, regardless of party affilliation, don't do anything unless it is beneficial to them. The needs of the people or the requirement for effective solutions to problems always take a back seat to vote buying.
Placebo solutions for a placebo population, when's American Idol coming on!?
Because modern US politics has become about getting the politician elected into a future term rather than about the people. It's manufacture of consent in the age of the constant campaign.
Define your dangers, define what they offer, and define why they are ';placebo.';
Because they think we are stupid and that their temporary solutions will buy them a vote.
They're politicians.
Like what? I wouldn't call the high price of gas a ';clear and present danger.';
Cause Bush and McCain ARE the most clear and present danger.
